Backup Your Settings and Keys: In case your computer has a problem, a backup of your Data Krypter files, is the easiest way to recover your encrypted data since it includes your private keys and a history of symmetric secret keys used. If you don't have a backup, you would first re-install the software. Then recover encrypted data in one of these ways: a) for trial users, you encrypted data using the sample public key and saved a copy of the sample private key. You would use the private key to decrypt your files. b) you have recorded each of the secret keys used for symmetric encryption and the creation keys used to create public/private keys (for asymmetric encryption). You would use these to decrypt your files. When none of the above cases apply, it is impossible to to recover your encrypted data. Even the 'Data Recovery' module won't help you, because your public/private keys and secret keys would have been stored on your backup (which you don't have). So make regular backups to avoid any data loss!!! To make a backup: Click the Backup link at the bottom right. Choose a drive letter or some other the location to backup to. Click the Backup Data Files button. A new folder will be created with today's date and saved in the location you selected. All your settings and public/private keys will be saved in the folder. You should regularly do a backup to a memory stick, external drive or an online backup provider in case you ever have a problem with your computer. |
