File Formats:

Encrypted Files/Folders:

All encrypted files/folders have the extension dke (Data Krypter Encrypted) and usually the original extension is included in the file name.
e.g. When the document Letter.docx is encrypted it will usually be named: Letter_docx.dke
but during encryption you have the option to give it a random name.  You can also rename it after it has been encrypted.
When decrypted the original name will be recovered.
Folders don't have an extension so when a folder is encrypted, only the dke extension is added.
e.g. When the folder Test Data is encrypted it will be named: Test Data.dke

Public Keys:

Public keys have the user's name as part of the file name, in this format:
<User's Name>-<number>.bkey (Public key)

e.g. if the user's name is Walter R. Smith the public keys will be named:
 Walter-R-Smith-1.bkey
 Walter-R-Smith-2.bkey
 Walter-R-Smith-3.bkey, etc.

Unencrypted Private Keys:

Private keys have the user's name as part of the file name, in this format:
<User's Name>-<number>.vkey (Private key)

Note: private keys will always be encrypted so the software will not create a file with the vkey extension.

Encrypted Private Keys:

When private keys are encrypted, they will be named:
 Walter-R-Smith-1_vkey.dke
 Walter-R-Smith-2_vkey.dke
 Walter-R-Smith-3_vkey.dke, etc.

Note: when a file was asymmetricall encrypted, the software uses the private key to decrypt it.  Since the private key is encrypted it must be decrypted first.
However, it is only in memory, not saved to any file.

All keys are stored in the same folder where the Data Krypter software is located.
e.g. the default folder is C:\Krypter but a different location can be chosen during installation.
