Sharing/receiving public keys To send or receive encrypted data asymmetrically each the sender must have the receiver's public key. There are several ways of sharing your public key with someone else: 1. Send it as an attached file to an email. 2. If you are a company or organization that uses the Data Krypter put the public key on your company's or organization's website. 3. Upload it to a key server. (We will have a key server on our website sometime in 2024.) In a similar way you would get someone else's public key by: 1. Receiving it as an attachment to an email. 2. Downloading it from a company or organization's website. 3. Getting it from a key server. It is worth noting that most key servers only publish the public keys, they do not in any way check or guarantee the owner of the keys. Therefore, it is worth checking you have the correct public key with the owner before encrypting some data. Since email accounts can be hacked, you should verify that an email with a public key really came from who they claim to be. One way to do this is by asking the sender, via a text message or a phone call, if they sent you a public key. |
