Getting a new computer or re-installing/upgrading Windows

When you get a new computer or have to re-install Windows follow these steps to transfer the Data Krypter.  This will insure you do not lose any data.  You can also use these steps to install the Data Krypter on a second computer.

The first thing to do is to find your backup. If you don't have a backup, and your old computer still works, make a backup on your old computer.
Backups are usually done to a memory stick, external drive or an online backup provider.

If you have encrypted data, it is impossible to recover it, unless one of the following applies:
a) for trial users, you encrypted data using the sample public key and saved a copy of the sample private key.
b) you have a backup of your Data Krypter keys, which includes your private keys and a history of symmetric secret keys used.
c) you have recorded each of the secret keys used for symmetric encryption and
     the creation keys used to create public/private keys (for asymmetric encryption).

These keys would be used to decrypt your encrypted files.

When none of the above cases apply: you won't be able to recover your encrypted data.
Even the 'Data Recovery' module won't help you, because your public/private keys and
secret keys would have been stored on your backup (which you don't have).

When you have a backup of the Data Krypter keys:
1. If you're a trial user, go to our website and download another trial version. Run/open the file DK-Trial.exe.
     Select the location of your backup.
2. If you have purchased the full version, you'll find the file DK-Full.exe on the backup. Double-click it.
    The backup location will be shown.
3. Install the software and it will also restore your keys.
4. Start the software and re-enter your master password.
5. You may get a message that you are on a different computer than before.
    If so, contact Nuverb Systems Inc and they'll help you transfer your license to the new computer.

To start over when you don't have a backup:
1. If you're a trial user, go to our website and download another trial version. Run/open the file DK-Trial.exe.
2. If you have purchased the full version, find the file DK-Full.exe (usually in your Downloads folder) and double-click it.
    If you can't find the file, find the email that you received when you purchased the software.
    Click on the link to download the software and run/open the file.
3. Install the software.
4. Start the software and you will be prompted to pick a master password and enter your name.
5. If you purchased the full version, enter your activation code.
6. If you have recorded the creation keys used to create your public/private keys, use them to re-create your keys.
    If you saved your private keys in some other location, copy them to the folder where the software is installed.
